Learn to move with freedom! Alexander Technique is usually taught with a combination of verbal instructions and hands-on guidance to help you adopt freer and more efficient patterns of movement. Most of us use more muscular effort than we need - with AT you learn techniques for ‘unlearning’ habits of overwork leading to better posture, less strain on joints, better coordination, reduced pain and more energy left at the end of the day!
I had my first lesson in 1992 to help with my piano playing. A few minutes into the lesson I could feel years of tension starting to unwind. After a few years of lessons, workshops and working on myself I signed up to the three-year teacher training course. I graduated in 2013 and set up a practice in Manchester. I now teach in my studio in Todmorden, in Saddleworth and at the MATTS Alexander teacher training school in Wilmslow. I served on the Council of STAT, our professional society, 2016-2021. In addition to the standard 1600 hour training I have taken courses in Neuroscience and Pain related to the Alexander Technique. In my previous career I was a research engineer and Professor of acoustics. I particularly enjoy working with musicians because that's where I came from myself but anyone can benefit from Alexander training. Alexander students are proven to have less back pain and more adaptable muscle tone which is important for flowing movements.
